WMR and the New IRS App (Replacing IRS2Go): What Your Refund Status Means in 2027

Key Takeaways

  • IRS2Go was replaced by the new IRS app on September 25, 2026.
  • You can still check refund status in the app without signing in.
  • WMR and the app show three statuses: Return Received, Refund Approved, Refund Sent.
  • Direct deposits usually arrive 2 to 3 business days after Refund Sent.

IRS2Go no longer exists. On September 25, 2026, the IRS replaced it with a new mobile app simply called the IRS app (announcement IR-2026-114). If IRS2Go was on your phone with automatic updates turned on, it has probably already changed over.

The good news for refund watchers: you can still check refund status in the new app without signing in, just like before. The online Where’s My Refund (WMR) tool on IRS.gov hasn’t changed either. Both show the same three statuses: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent.

Below I cover what changed with the app, what each status actually means, and when the tracker updates. I’ll keep updating this page through the 2027 filing season.

What the New IRS App Does (and Doesn’t Do)

The IRS app is IRS2Go plus a sign-in. Without an account, you can still:

  • Check your refund status
  • Make certain payments
  • Find free filing help

If you sign in, you get a slice of your IRS Individual Online Account on your phone:

  • Refund and amended-return status
  • Your balance, payments and payment history
  • Select IRS notices and letters
  • Tax records and transcripts (the same free IRS transcripts you can get online)
  • Your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)
  • Some profile and communication settings

Sign-in uses the same login as your IRS online account, which for most people means ID.me. The app opens a secure browser window to sign you in, then sends you back to the app. Sessions time out after 60 minutes.

Phones, languages and limits

The app needs iOS or iPadOS 15.1 or later, or Android 7.0 or later. It’s available in English and Spanish.

It doesn’t replace IRS.gov. There are no Business Tax Account or Tax Pro Account features yet, so business owners and preparers still need the website. The IRS says it will add features over time.

For me, the transcript access is the big upgrade. Readers have long used their IRS tax transcript to see what WMR won’t show, and now that’s a tap away instead of a desktop login.

Refund Status 1: Return Received

Return Received means the IRS has your return and it passed the first screens: basic fraud filters, SSN checks and obvious red flags. Your return now sits here while the IRS checks the details and the refund amount.

Tax Topic 152 is just a general notice confirming this stage. The IRS says it issues most refunds within 21 days of e-filing if nothing gets flagged.

There’s no need to call while you’re in Return Received. Calls and letters won’t speed anything up.

Your status usually shows up:

  • 24 hours after the IRS accepts a current-year e-filed return
  • 3 to 4 days after an e-filed return for either of the two prior tax years
  • About 4 weeks after you mail a paper return

Check too early and you may see a not processed message. Give it a day or two. You or your preparer also get an IRS acceptance email when you e-file.

If extra checks kick in, your message will change and the return processing can run past the normal timeframe. Respond quickly to any IRS letter asking for more information.

Refund Status 2: Refund Approved

Refund Approved means your return checked out and the IRS has set your refund date. If you chose direct deposit, you’ll see the date the money should reach your account.

This is the status people wait for. When something is off, the IRS gives very little detail in WMR or the app. It usually mails a letter instead, which can add days, weeks or even months.

If you’re past 21 days, here’s what to do when there’s still no refund.

No bank account on the return? Expect a CP53E

Paper refund checks are mostly gone. Under Executive Order 14247, Treasury began phasing them out on September 30, 2025.

If you file without direct deposit details, the IRS still processes your return. But it sends a CP53E notice asking for bank information first, and falls back to a paper check only after about six weeks with no response. Follow the instructions on the notice itself to send your bank details; the IRS hasn’t said the new app can do that.

Refund Status 3: Refund Sent

Refund Sent means the IRS has released your money and shows the date it went out. You can match that date against my IRS refund schedule.

Direct deposits usually land within 2 to 3 business days. Only contact your bank if nothing has arrived after that window.

You may also see a note that your refund was reduced or offset. The IRS still sends whatever amount it approved, and a letter explains the reason (more on offsets below).

When WMR and the IRS App Update

The tracker updates once a day, usually overnight, so refreshing all afternoon won’t show anything new. WMR and the app pull from the same refund data, so they should always match.

Here’s the pattern readers and I have seen over the years:

  • Daily accounts: bigger WMR updates tend to land on Wednesdays.
  • Weekly accounts: bigger updates tend to land on Saturdays.
  • Transcripts: daily accounts often update Tuesdays, weekly accounts Fridays.

You can tell which you are from the cycle code on your transcript. It’s an eight-digit code showing when your return posted to the IRS Master File. I explain how to read it in this video.

Expect scheduled maintenance on Sunday and Monday nights. At peak season, heavy traffic can also cause identity errors or missing bars until load drops.

Help! My Status Bars Disappeared

Missing bars usually mean your return is under review and the IRS needs something before it continues. It doesn’t mean your return was rejected.

You’ll either see directions in WMR or the app, or get a letter. Follow it and respond fast, since that’s the best way to avoid further refund delays.

An explanation code often shows on your transcript before WMR changes. Seeing “N/A” on your transcript alongside missing bars is common too. If you’re unsure what the IRS wants, a tax pro or a Taxpayer Advocate can help.

One reader, Brandi, saw her bars vanish about a week after acceptance. A letter asking her to verify her identity followed, then nearly two hours on hold.

Once verified, it took about six more weeks. Her advice to other readers: don’t count on the IRS being fast.

Reduced Refund Messages (Code 203 or 570)

A reduced-refund message on Refund Sent usually means a Treasury offset. Your refund went toward a federal or state debt, such as overpaid unemployment or back taxes.

A Code 570 on your transcript is different. It’s a hold for more checks, and nothing moves until it’s released.

Either way, you’ll get a letter. Offsets can be disputed through the Bureau of the Fiscal Service. For other reasons, see why refunds come in lower than expected, or watch this video.

Prior-Year Returns and Amended Returns

WMR and the app cover the current tax year plus the two prior years. You’ll need the SSN or ITIN, filing status and the exact refund amount from that year’s original return.

That multi-year check only works online or in the app. The automated refund hotline still covers just the current year. For an older return, your tax transcript can also show where it stands.

Amended returns are now in the app too, once you sign in. Give an amended return about three weeks to show up at all; processing commonly takes 16 weeks or more. If you need to fix a return, see my guide on handling a missed W-2 or 1099 after filing.

Where Readers Get Tripped Up With the New App

I’ve already had questions about the switch. Here are the snags I see most:

  • “My IRS2Go never updated.” Older phones below iOS 15.1 or Android 7.0 can’t run the new app. Use WMR in your phone’s browser instead.
  • Look-alike apps. Only download through the Apple App Store or Google Play links at IRS.gov/app. The IRS never asks for personal or bank details by text, email or pop-up.
  • Signing in when you don’t need to. Refund status works without an account. Skip ID.me if all you want is your refund date.
  • Typing the wrong refund amount. Use the exact whole-dollar refund from your return. A rounded or post-offset number won’t match.
  • Calling too early. Phone agents can’t see more than WMR until 21 days after e-filing or six weeks after mailing. After that, here’s how to reach a real person at the IRS.

What I’m Watching Before the 2027 Filing Season

The IRS usually opens filing season in late January, though it hasn’t named the 2027 date yet. The full schedule lives in my post on when you can file your taxes.

Here’s what I’m tracking between now and then:

  • The 2027 opening date, typically announced in early January.
  • New app features. The IRS has promised more over time. Business accounts are the obvious gap.
  • Paper-check stragglers. Last season was the first without routine paper refunds. Watch for more CP53E letters if filers skip bank details.
  • Load problems. January is the first real test of the app at peak traffic.

I’ll update this page as each one lands.

Frequently Asked Questions
QWhat happened to the IRS2Go app?
AThe IRS replaced IRS2Go with the new IRS app on September 25, 2026. If you had IRS2Go with automatic updates on, it should have switched over on its own. Otherwise, update it or download the IRS app from the official store links at IRS.gov/app.
QDo I need an ID.me account to check my refund in the new IRS app?
ANo. Refund status, certain payments and free filing help work without signing in. You only need your IRS online account login (usually ID.me) for features like transcripts, notices, balances and your IP PIN.
QWhat's the difference between Return Received and Refund Approved?
AReturn Received means the IRS has your return and is still processing it, with no refund date yet. Refund Approved means processing is done and a specific refund date has been set.
QHow often does Where's My Refund update?
AOnce a day, usually overnight. WMR and the IRS app use the same refund data, so checking either one more often won't show anything new.
QWhy did my WMR status bars disappear?
AIt usually means your return needs more review or identity verification, not that it was rejected. Check your transcript and follow any letter the IRS sends.
QWhy won't the IRS app install on my phone?
AIt needs iOS or iPadOS 15.1 or later, or Android 7.0 or later. On an older phone, use Where's My Refund in your mobile browser instead.

PATH MESSAGE does NOT mean you are finished processing and waiting for a date!!!

This is why a lot of people were upset last year. Because of this way of thinking and what others were saying!

Do NOT rely on WMR alone. Transcripts are 100% certian. Everyone should be able to access transcripts. If you can’t make a ID.ME account, keep trying until a real person comes on.

If your transcripts show you are fully processed and just wanting on a date, then I would be a little more confident that yes, you are done and just wanting on path to lift. But please remember you are not 100% “good” until you see that 846 code with a DDD date.

The April 15th date is on everyone’s transcripts. It’s just tue last day of the tax season.

    1. Thanks for the details Christina. Transcripts are 100% correct at a point in time, but the IRS (per their guidance) have said these are updated regularly as new codes and cycle dates are updated. I would say you should use a combination of WMR/IRS2Go and Transcript to infer refund processing status.

Even then, you will be a the whim of the IRS and subject to overall processing delays or additional verification.

    Hello Everyone,
After the IRS Where’s My Refund website updated last week, my friend can no longer track his 2020 tax return. He was able to see bars and it said, “Being Process.” Now, when he tries to trace his 2020 tax return, the IRS Where’s My Refund, displays” information is incorrect and doesn’t match.” However, before the update, the website displayed bars and 2020 tax return was being processed. I truly believe the IRS is focus on the 2021 tax returns now. Is it still possible for people that didn’t received their 2020 tax return, still track it using the IRS Where’s My Refund Website mobile app, when it states, “2021.” Thank you for any suggestions or help.

    1. Crystal Yvonne

      Hi Sharinda,
You’re right, they are focusing now on the 2021 returns, and unfortunately, your 2020 return went on ‘the back burner’ until… who knows??
I am still awaiting my 2019 return, same thing happened to me with the bars and status last January. :(
The best thing to do now is call on Monday morning at 7am (local time) and have your return handy, they will ask for AGI.
1-800-829-1040 press 1 for English (2 for Spanish), then 2 for Personal Tax Return (1 for business, 3 for all other questions). Or if asked to put extension# in, press 652.
      Good Luck ,
      ~ Crystal :)

Thanks. I plan to help a friend write and call them. I’m glad I took screen shots of the tracking the process from beginning to now. I will send screen shots along with a letter. Unbelievable.

My husband and I are dealing with the same situation. All the way up until they updated their system, it was saying “our taxes were being processed”. Now, after the update, it says “Information doesn’t match our records”. Its funny, because all this time, up to a week ago, our information matches their records but now it doesn’t. You would think they would’ve sent a email, a letter or something. Now here we are back at square one, except this time, we literally know less than what we did before their system update. I have never seen or heard of anything like it.

      1. I filed and accepted with tax act yesterday and checked WMR today no orange bar saying accepted and it’s says no info or error in putting in my info?

      2. U must of owed something
